HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WPDE) — Beachgoers in South Carolina worked together to free a pelican when they noticed it was caught in a fishing line.
Stephanie Sally took the video at Garden City on Thursday and said the quick response from everyone on the beach proved successful. Sally said someone noticed a wad of fishing line and started to pull it in when they realized a pelican was hooked.
Even though the pelican was able to be saved, experts are reminding people to not hold a pelican's beak closed when trying to help.
"Please do not hold a pelican's beak closed like that, they can suffocate. They do not have any other openings in their beak to get oxygen. Just in case anyone ever comes into that situation, keep that in mind," the Executive Director at Carolina Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Kimberly Cerimele said.
Cerimele said the proper method is placing one finger between the upper and lower beak to allow the animal to breathe.
