SUNNYSIDE, Wash. (KIMA) — A teenager who created a spectacular dress using only duct tape has won a national scholarship competition.

Larissa Leon, of Sunnyside, Washington, has claimed one of two winning spots for the "Stuck at Prom" scholarship contest held by Duck Brand Duct Tape.

With her win, Larissa will get a $10,000-scholarship prize.

She shares the top spot with Ryan B., who won for his creative tuxedo duct tape design.

Leon shared her inspiration behind the design, saying she created the Folklorico-inspired dress to honor her roots.

"The gown was designed to honor my culture, helping me pay homage to my roots, along with making a beautiful dress for prom that’s made out of Duct Tape, something that many of my friends and family thought to be impossible," Leon said.

The teen says it took 163 hours of work to turn her idea into a reality.
